More Information
The Summer Palace, originally constructed in 1750, was built under the Qianlong emperor (reigned 1736–1795) to celebrate his mother's birthday. During subsequent regimes the palace was used as a pleasure garden to escape the summer heat in Beijing. The palace was rebuilt in 1886, in 1888, and again in 1902, after it had been damaged during the famous civil conflict known as the Boxer Rebellion.
